In the fall of 1912, Ned Cheney enrolled at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He joined his older brother Rollo who had attended KU for two years.

In Lawrence, Rollo and Ned Cheney joined the Kansas National Guard. Among other duties, they were obliged to attend summer camp at the Camp of Instruction at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Life around Gypsum and McPherson continued as it had, with family visits, new technology, and country doctor episodes.

E.R. Cheney continued to embrace his love for automobiles, trading his horse barn for an auto garage.

In 1913, Rollo Cheney graduated from Kansas University and enrolled in Kansas City Dental College in Kansas City.

The dental school was established in 1881 as the Kansas City Dental College and was originally part of Kansas City Medical College. The Kansas City Dental College merged with Western Dental College to form the Kansas City-Western Dental College. In 1941, the Dental College affiliated with the privately supported University of Kansas City and became that institution’s School of Dentistry. In 1961 the University of Kansas City joined the four-campus state University of Missouri system. Since then the dental school has been known as the UMKC School of Dentistry.

The Cheney boys, as always, were visitors to their grandfather in Groveland.

Country Doctor

For this episode, I’ve chosen four stories. They’re all different, but they all reflect the diversity of responsibilities and experiences of the Country Doctor. Inclement weather, continuing education, patient treatment, and presenting a technical paper.

In Spring 1914, Fred Cheney graduated from Gypsum High School. That summer he got a job as an auto mechanic at the local garage.

After attending Kansas National Guard encampment during the summer, Rollo Cheney headed back to Kansas City Dental College.

Ned Cheney got a summer job at Gypsum Roller Mills. In August, he attended the Chautauqua in Salina.

Chautauqua is a social and educational movement, begun in 1874 in a campsite on the shores of Lake Chautauqua, New York.

The Chautauqua movement, which flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, brought popular education and entertainment like lectures, concerts, and plays to communities across the country, often through traveling shows

In 1914, the year Ned attended, there were 2,900 Chautauquas in the country. There are still Chautauquas today, but they fell out of favor with the advent of radio and television.

At summer’s end, Ned returned to college at Kansas University.
